But information about an earlier murder in the same house where Iris was killed further incriminates the accused, who repeatedly disappears while shrewd Mason, preparing for the trial, looks elsewhere for a suspect. Will the great lawyer crush the opposition at the height of the courtroom proceedings? Of course. Chastain adheres to Gardner's successful formula in which the fun comes from guessing how--not if--Perry will win his daunting cases. Literary Guild alternate.

Very good mystery.

This is the first Perry Mason mystery I've ever read. If you liked the television series, you'll find all the same characters in this book. It's a good mystery and moves swiftly. It reads a bit too much like a script, however. There's almost no attention to scenery. The reader is given almost no information of what the characters think and feel.

The Case of the Burning Bequest

Perry Mason receives a call from a young woman. Her stepmother was found stabbed to death inside her house. The police find a pair of garden shears in the step mom's back. One glove is found outside, its mate is missing. Anne Kimbro's fiancee found the body, and becomes the chief suspect. Anne's step mom objected strongly to her romance with John Leland, due to their parent's relationship. The police are looking for physical evidence, like DNA on John's shirt and handkerchief, to arrest John. We learn that John's father had killed Anne's mother decades earlier. Both families owned stock in a very successful drug company. John's father disappeared after this killing and has never been found! John received a telephone call to his realtor's office, went to this house, met Anne, and they fell in love. But nobody knows who made this call! Perry learns a fact about Iris' past that may be connected to her murder. After the missing bloodstained glove is found hidden away in that house the police arrest John Leland for the murder.

Somebody then sets Anne's house on fire and it burns to the ground, destroying any overlooked evidence. Chapter 17 of this 1991 book explains the new science of DNA testing, which can uniquely identify a person from a bloodstain. Some of the blood found on the victim's body came from John Leland. Then there is videotaped testimony of Benjamin Jantzen, too ill to personally appear in court. The preliminary hearing is interrupted by the news of what was found at the burned down house. Then Anne's stepfather is found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in his garage by John Leland! Chapter 20 has the solution to Anne's mother's murder; it was not John's father. [I found the hints to the real killer.] In Chapter 21 Mason asks the DNA expert if the glove without bloodstains had been tested for DNA; it wasn't [no limb hair?]. Mason wins an acquittal by a hair in Chapter 22. The videotaped confession of the real killer leads to John Leland's acquittal. Mason wonders about the many spectators who congratulate John in Chapter 23. What were their personal motives?

Thomas Chastain was a past president of the Mystery Writers of America and wrote many other books. He was hired by the Erle Stanley Gardner Trust to write this book that follows the original style. There are differences. Usually the first chapter brings in some problem that is followed by a murder. Gardner often mentioned background details about Los Angeles (such as the increasing traffic). I think Chastain lives in another part of the country. There are no details about the lunch in Chapter 6. The drug company that is being sued for a problem with its product is new and good. Anne Kimbro's many romances make her sound like some Hollywood heiress. A wealthy industrialist who uses his political influence against Perry's client seems novel (more likely a newspaper owner). Legal strategy is explained in Chapter 10. Perry "had to drive around the block a couple of times" to find a parking space (Chapter 11) Would Perry drink while working? [This story echoes the "Drowning Duck".]

He does it again!

This is Thomas Chastain's second "Perry Mason" book; I also reviewed his first book (The Case of Too Many Murders). I finished this a few days ago. Once again, and enjoyable story; mostly believable that I was reading an ESG Perry Mason.

Either Mr Chastain changed his style, or (more likely) I was used to his writing; the things that jarred me in the first book are here, too -- but knowing that they would be absent, they weren't as jarring is the first time.

One thing that hit me hard was the Paul Drake, Jr and Perry Mason dialogue. In this book, it sounded a lot like the original Paul Drake... and that was hard to swallow. Paul Drake, Sr, called Perry Mason "Perry" -- but his son shouldn't be calling Perry Mason "Perry" - it sounded very much like Paul Drake (the original) - when I reminded myself that this was Paul, Jr, the "OK, Perry" didn't ring true. Perry would probably have been a godparent to Paul, Jr, and may even have been an "Uncle Perry."

Bottom line: A good story, but not quite the same.

Awesome cookbook

I LOVE this cookbook. If you are looking to save money, then you need this cookbook. I have made gift baskets with all the odds and ends for a wedding and put this cookbook in it. It was a big hit. It has so many easy and delicious recipes in it. I have alot of cookbooks but I always grab this one first. To me everyone needs this book especially young women who are just starting out. It has alot of tips in it. It also has recipes for beauty supplies, cleaning supplies, things for kids such as homemade playdough which is pretty cool. If you buy it you won't be sorry.

I purchased the book for my daughter in law because I already had it and had been pleased with it. The book also had a lot of money saving tips that I appreciated such as the way to use left over slivers of soap, facial scrubs, scented lotions and projects for kids. I would definitely recommend this book.

a VERY schoalr approach to the samurai

I am presently translating the book into Hungarian so have to go into every detail of it. I feel the choice of topic is quite good, at last a book which does not only focus on Zen Buddhism but also gives information about other important factors of the religious lives of the bushi. However, the author does not seem to have organised her work very well, repetitions, inconsistencies are a characteristic feature of the book. After all, I recommend it to devotees of the area but it is definitely not a Sunday afternoon reading.

Well worth reading.

Pretty dry reading, but informative and accurate. I'm nearly 70 now and I can tell ya that Toffler hits the nail on the head with this book. I'd been hearing about it for decades - now I know what all the talk was about.

Seeing today's young (and old) zombies riveted to their smart phones while walking out into traffic, into pools and fountains etc. totally oblivious to their surroundings and the rest of the world pretty much drives the message home.

Personally, I'm glad that I was born way back when people thought for themselves and made their own decisions.

The Shocking Future: Are you becoming Obsolete?

This is a visionary work of literature, that was written in 1970. What is amazing is the realities of today that this author has so accurately captured 40 years ago. The book anticipated what we are facing today, an accelerated rate of changes in technology.

Every couple of months, as you may now be aware, CPU chip speeds in desktop and laptop computers keep increasing. Staying on the cutting edge of technology is almost a full-time job. Next we are faced with an ever-changing cellular phone and MP3 player product range. Now, even the way we read books is changing with things like the ipad and the kindle. Where will this all end? Do we have to keep running just to keep pace with what's happening? The Internet and the dramatic impact that this has made, may not even have been fully envisioned by this author, but it is here and evolving at its own rate, making the earth a global village.

Mr. Toffler attacks this problem in Six Parts as follows:

- The Death of Permanence
- Transience
- Novelty
- Diversity
- The Limits of Adaptability
- Strategies for Survival

In the end, each of us must formulate our own strategies for this rapidly and ever changing world that we now live in. This author, has given some clinical and effective methods that we can tailor to our own personal situation. We must all continue to adjust or run the risk of being left behind and becoming 'obsolete'.

Interesting - but not sure the shock really ever happened

Interesting book. I remember my dad reading this book when I was little. I bought it at the recommendation of a colleague. There are some interesting theories in the book, especially looking back to see how some of them played out. I am not sure that the "shock, distress, and overload" that Toffler predicted has come about. His theory that there will be immense changes based on technological and other advancements was not a far reach. However, his prediction that society will ultimately not be able to adapt to, process, or manage al the new capabilities and the changes that they bring may not be wholly accurate. The shock seems to be more on the older generation (for example, not understanding how the younger generation will communicate by text rather than spoke word, even within direct proximity to each other) and the overload also seems to be on the older generation (watching some seniors try to program a GPS can be interesting), but the younger generation seems to be processing and adopting very well. In my generation, one was hard pressed to get to typing 60 words per minute in a typing class, focusing on one paragraph within one single subject - yet the technology of today has taught small children to type just as quickly while managing multiple conversations at one time. There are some good lessons to consider in this book, so it's not a waste of time to read.

This book, while advertised as a reference book hardly qualifies. It is printed on cheap paper, is not typeset, and looks like a cheap copy machine generated collection of a hand-made book. Definitely not worth the money...I don't recommend this one.

Some real Friedlander Gems

Friedlander has been on a publishing streak lately—republishing old projects in new expanded editions with far more pictures. It appears that “Children: the Human Clay” is a companion volume to “Portraits: the Human Clay”—which refers back to the 1985 “Portraits” project, now 30 years old. That volume contained a total of 71 images, about 15 of which were children.
The new volume is bigger and thicker—divided into two parts—the first part appear to be family pictures—made in private spaces—some of the pictures in this section have been published before in the “Family in the Picture” project from 2011. The second section is where the book comes alive—children in public places. There are some real gems: a pair of small girls holding a rattlesnake—hopefully a rubber replica; a boy with a large frog and a small trophy; and a pair of small girls dressed like Queen Elizabeth considering Allen Ginsberg meditating in Central Park.
While some viewers may be approaching Friedlander fatigue, there are enough truly delightful new images to justify purchasing the book. As always, Yale does a terrific job of book production.
