Her areas of research and publication include painting and calligraphy by Japanese Zen masters from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, and contemporary Japanese fashion. A great guide to the philosophy and beauty of Zen Circles of Enlightenment

As someone who has had a life long interest in Asian martial arts, brush/ink arts, Haiku and Enso(Zen circles), I found this to be an excellent guide to the philosophical aspects of Zen circles. I never realized how many types of circles could be made and all are unique in themselves. The introduction explains the relationship between Zen and the circle. The circle is often used in Zen to teach, enlighten and look into ourselves. Each brush stroke is unique in itself. In conclusion, this is a book anyone who is into Shodo (Japanese Calligraphy) and Enso (Zen circle of enlightenment)will love.

Each page a revelation

I have owned this Enso since it first came out and looked at it many times, but now I have been sitting with this wonderful book all week long. It is like sitting with a friend who only is able to visit on the rarest of occasions.

Every day I look at one or two more pages, each with an enso on the right side of the book, and Ms. Seo's brief, informative, evocative commentary on the left. What a wonderful week it has been, continues to be, always will be, as the spirit of enso permeates my life.

I feel this is the result of Ms. Seo's selections, and the way she presents them. Slowly, as I make my way through the book, I feel I am becoming steeped in the place from which these beautiful enso arise. And the way the text accompanying each image is written aids this gradual sinking in. So, rising up is meeting sinking in. How rare for a book to be able to accomplish such stillness. Perhaps it is helping me to paint the circle of myself.

Zen Circles

This is an excellent consideration of both the circles and the accompanying texts that are part of the enso experience. There is a perceptive description of each of the monks (and occasionally a nun) who created the ensos selected and an interesting analysis of both the art of the circle and the calligraphy of the individual work he or she created. As an artist I found the material in this book stimulating and productive.

He establishes Melville's position in the rift among major Northern writers in which Emerson, Longfellow, Lowell, and Whittier were on one side and Melville, Hawthorne, and—to some extent—Whitman were on the other.

By delving into the complexities and apparent contradictions of Melville's personal life, Garner reveals why a man who was diametrically opposed to slavery refused to side with the abolitionists and maintained the anti-administration attitude predominant in his Democratic family while supporting the Union war effort.

In 1886 Herman Melville (1818-1891), author of Moby Dick , published Battle-Pieces , a collection of poems reflecting his ambivalence about the Civil War. In a meticulously researched study, Garner, secretary of the Melville Society, provides a detailed account of Melville's life during the Civil War and argues for a reappraisal of Battle-Pieces , which has generally been viewed unfavorably by earlier critics. A Northerner who opposed slavery but feared the dissolution of the Union more, Melville expressed horror at the tragedy of war as well as sympathy for the defeated Southerners. Although he did not personally engage in combat, Melville followed the war news carefully and traveled into the battlefield. Garner posits that Melville's original use of metaphor and imagery provides a unique poetic vision of a country at war with itself. His otherwise objective study is marred by a negative attitude towards Northern abolitionists, a point of view shared by Melville. Illustrations not seen by PW.

Stanton Garner is a retired professor of English in the University of Texas system. Aspects of Melville

Stanton Garner details a day by day chronology of Melville's activities during the Civil War and links them to Melville's first published book of poetry, _Battle Pieces: Aspects of the War_. Garner's prose is elegant, his sources are thoroughly documented, and his insights into Melville's art are incisive and illuminating. Readers interested in the Civil War may find much of interest pertaining to daily life in northern communities, but this book is not about the War as much as it is about Melville and _Battle Pieces_.
_Battle Pieces_ has been dismissed by some critics as a collection of poorly executed war poems by a failed writer past his prime, but Garner shows us how Melville exercises his prodigious creative talent to build a literary work unlike any contemporary product in the style of its poems and in its substantive treatment of a complex subject. By placing the poems in their historic context and linking them to the family's political views (conservative Democrats disposed toward support of the McClellan candidacy etc.), we gain insight into many otherwise hidden associations.
Garner's chronology begins with Melville's 1859 voyage to San Francisco aboard his brother's ship _The Meteor_ and continues until just after the publication of _Battle Pieces_ in 1866. Among the more interesting episodes is Melville's visit to the front during the late winter of 1864 to see his cousin, Lt. Henry Gansevoort. This leads to an evening's audience with General Grant, where we imagine Melville gaining valuable material for his work. The next day, he joins an expedition of troops scouting for Moseby's men during which he is directly exposed to the dangers of war.
Some prospective readers may be tempted to wait for the publication of Hershel Parker's second volume of _Herman Melville: A Biography_. Parker's work, written in much the same style, will have the benefit of Parker's decades of experience updating the Melville Log, so we can expect additional biographical detail. But Garner's insights into Melville's literary work give _Civil War Years_ enduring value worthy of a separate volume.
While Garner provides pertinent excerpts of Melville's poems as he discusses them, readers will want a copy of _Battle Pieces_ near them as they read.

A Great Civil War Book and a Great Herman Melville Book

This book has been wonderful company to me both at home and while travelling. If you are absorbed by the Civil War and Herman Melville, you will love "The Civil War World of Herman Melville" down to your toes. Best of all, no matter how well you think you know Melville or the Civil War, you will learn something you didn't know before. The book is an almost day-to-day journey through the war from the home front to the battle front with a family that just happens to be that of America's greatest writer. I love this book without having been fully convinced by Mr. Garner's views on the value of Melville's war poems, and while disagreeing with his harsh judgement of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. I do agree with the above reviewer who advises having a copy of "Battle Pieces" on hand as a pleasure enhancer.

English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) is most famous for his satirical caricatures and moral paintings, the forerunners of cartoons. In this instructive volume, the august painter and engraver discusses and illustrates the use of serpentine lines in the expression of grace and beauty. Hogarth defines six qualities—fitness, variety, regularity, simplicity, intricacy, and quantity—and dramatizes their effective combination in images that employ S-shaped lines.
