But the greatest force undermining the game is love. The young Dancer Daedelus must choose between the delicate T’Ling, willing to die for love, and the fiery MyrrhMyrrh, who would kill for it. The cyborg, Angle, struggles with the longing to replace his human flesh and the knowledge that cold chrome repels the warmth of human touch. As they train for and compete in the Millennium Games, each Dancer confronts the shifting faces of love and idealism, and comes to terms with the multiple meanings of the maze game, the Glide language, and the Dance of Death.

Glide if you dare

This book answers the question, "What does it mean to move through a maze of language?" -- specifically, a visual language called Glide. (Like Tolkien, Slattery has invented language and story together.) Glide is "polymorphic, dynamic, inexorably ambiguous, proteanly metaphoric, illogically positive, and profligately generative of...questions." As a science fiction fan I admire the way Slattery tells this tale from its characters' (seemingly) alien viewpoints, and in their own words; it takes longer, but provides a stunning experience for readers willing to skim the glossary and then immerse themselves. _Maze Game_'s "idea-intensiveness" (and civilization-wide scope) also reminded me of Asimov's _Foundation Trilogy_, except that since Slattery stays with the same characters throughout, I grew to care about them more than I did Asimov's. And fans of fantasy will also recognize a story in which things are going from bad to worse: what can be done? and who will have the courage to do it? Finally, this book is about oracles; it is itself oracular; it refers readers to an online version of the language and oracle they can try themselves. As the Glides say, "A book cannot read itself, much less interpret its own story." This book needs you to read it, and interpret, if you dare! This book will blow your mind

I've struggled for a while, wanting to review this book and trying to see where to begin. That is how astonishing Diana Slattery's vision of this place is, a place where something like AIDS has been cured through the creation of something more horrible, the "disease" of immortality, spread through blood products and bodily fluids. For me, that is the "what if" that makes this novel/interactive experience so tantilizing. It makes me imagine imortality as something where you best be careful or you might "catch" it.
And this curse of immortality creates the phenomena of the Death Dancers and the Maze Game. (allegory coming, duck! Do you think Earth could be an afternoon soap opera for a race of gods or little gray aliens?)
You need to read this book for the hilarious surprise of figuring out who 'Oh-T'bee is. Folks from New York will love the ironic twist.
Oracles and AI, but this is not cyberpunk in the strict sense of the genre. The Maze Game pushes past that and imagines a cosmology, like Ursula LeGuin in the Hain series, a cosmology spun out by a concept. This ties in to some of Diana Slattery's other work looking at alphabets and the cultures that come out of them, considering a culture based on uncertainty and doubt, interpretation, layers of meaning. We learn to think about lilies and this thing called "Glide Mind."
It's like haiku crossed with I Ching crossed with Tarot, and delivered through an omnipresent artificial intelligence agent in glyphs. Diana invented a language of glyphs just so she could craft poems in it and imagine a culture that lives inside those poems.
And as a student of the Tarot, I found my own layers in this book, layers relating indirectly to the 4 types of Death Dancers and the 4 suits in the Tarot, corresponding also to Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. These things become highly differentiated styles of the dance.
And those old, old Immortals, shades hiding their impossibly old eyes, they watch, enviously.

The Maze Game

Like the Maze around and through which the story of the Death Dancers revolves and evolves, there are many levels to this creation, and the reader can take the experience as far as he or she wants to go. It can be taken only as far as the first level of compelling science fiction, or it can be taken to the next level of transportation through an amazing exploration of language, creativity and consciousness. The reader can interact with and have a personal experience with the language of the Glides, or, if the reader isn't inclined to interrupt the flow of the story, a simple open mind will allow the novel to speak to the part of all of us that asks the continuing question: What is this experience of consciousness? And that is what has stayed with us most vividly since reading The Maze Game - that we are reminded of each time an event takes place that shakes up the global reality: Diana Reed Slattery has captured the feeling of a haunting possibility that has been posited in human consciousness throughout the ages: Is this reality we are all participating in some kind of game we are playing with ourselves to maintain an illusion?

I don't want to say too much

I loved Sebastian from the beginning. Despite all his flaws. He was sexy, intelligent and rich. He wore his wealth more like a hoodie than a family encrusted blazer, even though he was definitely old money.

Mina, well it took me awhile to warm up to her. Just as it took awhile for her to ultimately understand herself.

The research Mina was doing in the story seemed like it was real and had meaning, but it was lost on me. I loved her searching through old trunks and admired her determination, but whatever she was researching lost my interest. I am sorry to say. I have to admit I had gotten this book through Edelweiss and I did not read the book blurb. Not knowing what was coming really added to a mystery element that i enjoyed. The book blurb does not give away too much that the story can not still be very much enjoyed, but i am glad I didn't.

I don't want to say too much, because reading every page on your own will really add so much more than me telling you about it. Let me just say this much, Mina learned a lot in two years, but not nearly enough. Sebastian may have been cast as man with a big desire for kink, but his heart is much bigger.

The sex was scorching hot and plentiful. It is most definitely for a mature audience. I will look for more work by this author in the future.

And now for something a little different. It’s still romance but not historical.
This is the first contemporary romance I’ve read as well as the first book I’ve read by the amazing voice of Sabrina Darby.
I am hooked on this author’s writing style; it’s very elegant and succinct and there is much more going on under the surface. I read an excerpt from this book after hearing about it on Twitter and bought it immediately for my Nook. It says it’s a novella, but it’s really not; the author says it’s 250 pages. Devoured this book! Mina's life is impacted dramatically when she meets Sebastian for the first time...and not in a good way. The second go round is completely different, as she enters into a non-relationship with him that takes her to the limits of her sensuality. Can she and Sebastian's attraction transcend the physical and become more?
No spoilers here...read the book to find out! And don't blame me if you can't put it down until you do....

About the Author

Dr Alex Blewitt

Dr Alex Blewitt has been developing Java applications since version 1.0 was released in 1996, and has been using the Eclipse platform since its first release as part of the IBM WebSphere Studio product suite. He even migrated some plug-ins from VisualAge for Java to WebSphere Studio / Eclipse as part of his PhD in Automated Verification of Design Patterns. He got involved in the open source community as a tester when Eclipse 2.1 was being released for Mac OS X, and then subsequently as an editor for EclipseZone, including being a finalist for Eclipse Ambassador in 2007. More recently, Alex has been writing for InfoQ, covering generic Java, specifically Eclipse and OSGi subjects. He was the keynote speaker at the OSGi Community Event 2011 on the past, present, and future of OSGi. The coverage of both new releases of the Eclipse platform as well as its projects and video interviews with some of the Eclipse project leads can be found on the InfoQ home page; for this, he won the Eclipse Top Contributor award in 2012. powerful development tools

Hmm. The book came out in August 2014. Strange that no reviews have been posted by now (Dec 2014), so I will try to remedy the situation.

Eclipse is perhaps the most common development environment for java programming. Blewitt shows the latest developments in its support for adding plug-ins. A good aspect of the book is that it jumps right in. You are expected to be already using Eclipse and hopefully have written some prior plug-ins.

Chapter 2 has a long discussion about how the classpath is used. As a practical matter, complexity and bugs can arise from problems with the elements (jar files) listed in the classpath. This is not restricted to programming with Eclipse. But the chapter delves into the details of, for example, the loading of all extensions via the classpath. To this ends, you might also check out chapter 6, which is a companion description of class loaders. Historically, this was the crucial idea that drove the very successful use of java inside enterprise computing on the Internet in the dot com years. You can now see here what the latest features of the class loader can do for your code.

The text also goes into OSGi services and runtime. For dynamically hooking up your executable to existing services.

Another useful feature is the Gogo shell and a console view, where the latter comes with Eclipse. Likely, you have run the console to see output from your programs. But the text shows how other consoles can be invoked, with various advantages for each.

Throughout the book are many code snippets and examples of running programs from a console or terminal window. Useful guidance.

A must read series!

I would advise reading the whole series in sequence to get the full impact of the story. You will not regret it. The Changeling offers up so many surprises, as well as answers questions to long awaited puzzles. Danny has such a persona you can't help but be enthralled by him. As a reader who has followed this story Danny remains constant in his obsessions. The graphic sex is part of the story but not the whole storyline. The characters interaction and behavior extend beyond a graphic sex novel. The real questions must be who, why, when, Danny is a product of his environment and the Changeling gives insight to him as a person and the people around him. If you read Hope House and then read The Changeling you will find yourself shocked by a reversal of preconceived opinions. The Author gives us a Brilliant story of a smart young man who is unable to break free from the nature and urges that compel him. Very brilliantly written as each novel in series has, The Changeling maintains this high standard. Defiantly a BUY.

Cannot stop reading these stories....

Even though they are definitely some of the more disturbing reads in my library. I will continue to read anything by this author, as the journey takes you to some decisively hard-to-imagine-yourself-in places, but you find yourself cheering for some characters and wishing others would just drop dead! An excellent barometer of an authors' talent, in my opinion.
Not for the faint of heart, but if you've read the others in the series, then you already know this.

Question: How did you come up with the idea for the Tribe series?

Kaelyn: I’ve always loved dystopian and sci-fi stories that are full of twists and turns, surprises, suspense, and mystery, so it seemed like a no-brainer to combine all those elements into a thrilling adventure with an exciting female lead.

Q: Is Tribe for kids only?

Kaelyn: Not at all. There are some very adult themes in Tribe, but I wanted to write a story that anyone of any age can enjoy. The heroine is a sixteen-year-old girl who lives a life that, at times, seems sheltered to those of us in the modern world. But at the same time, the traditions of her people forces her to do things that would knock most of us flat.

Q: What other works inspired you to write Tribe?

Kaelyn: I really enjoy what The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Maze Runner provided for those of us who enjoy the young adult market, so it seemed natural to write Tribe.

Q: What sets Tribe apart from the books you mentioned?

Kaelyn: The main difference with Tribe is the underlying thread of mystery that runs through the entire series about what really happened to Kestrel’s world and why it happened—and I’m not giving that secret away until the last book :)

Q: Why did you choose to serialize Tribe?

Kaelyn: When I started thinking about Tribe, I knew it was going to be a big, deeply layered saga that would rip Kestrel Stoneheart away from her rather primitive lifestyle and force her to confront a secret and forbidden world that challenges everything she knows and believes. For me, a series of mini-adventures is the best way to gradually reveal things that neither Kestrel nor the reader would’ve ever guessed at the beginning. And, of course, that means leading up to a grand finale that keeps you glued to the edge of your seat.

Q: Can readers get the whole series in one place?

Kaelyn: Absolutely! Tribe: The Complete Saga (parts 1-5) is the best way for those who want to fully immerse themselves in Kestrel’s world, and also to save a bit of money while they’re at it!

ARC review - Tribe: The Harvesters

These comments are for an Advanced Review Copy (ARC). This story of the series is just as fast moving, suspenseful and surprising as the previous stories! The descriptions of the Harvesters did creep me out and I could well imagine how it would feel to be in that situation, facing the uncertainty of survival. But what can you do when it looks so hopeless? As a Red Hand, you face your fears and fight for your life with all your strength and abilities; at least die with honor! But the story twists and turns so quickly that Kestrel must be nimble mentally and physically. Caleb has proven that, even though he's rather clutzy, he is sharp witted, too. I had to shake my head at the city boy, Caleb, for being somewhat inept with the physical world. But they managed to survive and go "from the fry pan, into the fire" and out again to their rescue. But it is a mental challenge, joining with Kestrel, to figure out what those Ancestors had intended and what their plans are for her future and the future of her tribe. I'm definitely rooting for the tribal side!

Enjoyable fiction

Still finding some typos in the book, but enjoying the series, even if I'm not a teen. I enjoy books like this that get better with each book. Some scenarios are not really believable, but still enjoy staying with Kestrel as she matures and learns. I also like that there are no scenes written involving intimate relationships or bad language. I look forward to more of these by Kaelyn and have liked her FB page to follow what's next.
