Anthony Horowitz is the author of the number one bestselling Alex Rider books and The Power of Five series. Bax new edition adds much new info

Lewis Foreman's update to his excellent biography of Sir Arnold Bax is most welcome. Bax is certainly not a household name, but he wrote seven symphonies, a number of tone poems, and many works for the piano and other instruments. He was a master of complex orchestrations, and his works can be enjoyed on several levels. He was also complex, while at the same time simple, as a man. The new additions to the book help us to understand many of his contradictions, and his relationships.

Bax was born into a well-to-do English family, and never had to seek employment during his lifetime. That let him travel extensively during his youth and early adulthood, and lead to a deep and abiding love of things Celtic. That endures today in a great deal of his music, and the emotion is both close to the surface and also deep in much of his music that plumbs that source.

His tone poems make a fine introduction to his symphonies, and provide hours of enjoyment themselves. He was more than just a tunesmith, and his popularity during the 20's and 30's lead to an unexplainable decline until the 80's. The release of a large volume of his music on CD has resulted in a new audience, and renewed popularity for this almost forgotten composer.

Lewis Foreman has been one of the foremost proponents of his music, and has written the program notes for many of the recordings. His earlier biography was well written, and added much to this readers enjoyment of the music.

The new update has gleaned a lot of new material and many insights from the use of the material in the possesion of Harriet Cohen, his long-time mistress. She removed much of his personal papers immediately after his death, and also retained the large correspondence that she had with Bax over a period of many years. This volume may well be the last word, or nearly so, and is certainly worthy of a place in any musical library.

It also includes a very up-to-date discography and a catalog of Bax's works, compiled by Graham Parlett. A useful bibliography is provided, together with notes and an index. The book will be enjoyable and useful to many readers, and I also urge owners of the original volume to add this one to their collection.

Bax deserves the advocacy, but this book does not delve below the surface

Bax has written some of the most compelling and fascinating music ever to come out of the British isles; yet the survival of his legacy today depends almost entirely on the CD, and his music is virtually unknown outside Britain. I had hoped to find in Mr. Foreman's biography of the composer some explanation or theory regarding this perplexing state of affairs. I had expected, too, to see the colourful richness of the music reflected in an equally colourful description of Bax the man.
To my surprise, however, I found this book rather monotonous and, in a way, superficial. I hesitate to say this, seeing how many decades Mr. Foreman spent on studying his subject, but there it is. Maybe I set too high a standard for a composer biography, La Grange's "Mahler" being my idea of perfection. Compared to that monumental achievement, Foreman only gives us fragments, with the focus on brief analyses of key works, Bax's love interests, and his lifelong infatuation with Ireland and things Irish. What the book lacks is an integrated sense of the musical and social environment Bax lived and worked in, and his views of it. It is inconceivable to me that in a biography of an English composer who lived through the year 1945 no mention at all is made of probably the most sensational musical event in Britain for centuries, the premiere of "Peter Grimes". Similarly, it is frustrating to read that Bax went to hear this or that work of a fellow composer, but never to be told what he thought of it. Too often, Foreman is content with dropping names. Instead of filling in the details, we are treated to an umpteenth love-letter to Harriet or Mary. On a different note, I was quite amazed how the reader is made to forget that Bax actually had children. There's hardly a word about them - they get six and seven entries in the whole of the book, respectively.
In the end we have a pretty clear idea of outward events, but little sense of the inner workings of the man himself. What caused the eventual drying up of inspiration? Why was Bax so vulnerable to alcohol? What was the driving force behind his love affairs? What were his views of his own musical achievements - and those of others? How can it be explained that a man of such prodigious talent did not succeed in truly establishing himself? Why did fatherhood mean so little to him? Such questions remain largely unanswered. You might say that Foreman is a competent musicologist and a decent historian, but not much of a psychologist. Nonetheless, this is no doubt the best book on Bax around (it is, as far as I know, the ONLY book on Bax around) and Foreman does deserve praise for his staunch advocacy of this extremely interesting and unaccountably neglected composer.

This is an excellent biography of Sir Arnold Bax. It was an invaluable tool for me as I wrote my doctoral dissertation on the composer. Lewis Foreman shows great love and dedication to his subject, and writes in a way that makes you want to keep reading. His combination of personal information and analysis of the music is as good as that of anyone I've read.

Ecstasy & A Little Agony

Dean Cornwell was, indeed, a master of American illustration and anyone who shuddered at the $800 pricetag the first edition has been sporting over the years will find the new edition of this long-out-of-print classic welcome. Cornwell was a gifted painter and knew how to tell a story with a single canvas: his art is as engaging today as it was in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. But the downside to this new edition is that it *is* an exact reprint of the first: that means 3/4 of the book's color paintings are printed in black and white. Cornwell was such a master of color that it seems a crime that the publisher didn't take the time to go back and replace at least some of the readily available works and present them as the artist painted them, especially at a hefty $75 cover price. This is the only Cornwell book available and as such is an important part of any art library: however, it is *not* what a $75 Dean Cornwell book *should* be and buyers should be aware that the majority of "Dean Cornwell: Dean of Illustrators" is printed in black and white.

A Legacy Reclaimed

Dean Cornwell's legendary stature among American illustrators is rightfully restored by the reissue of this excellent 1978 retrospective. Cornwell, revered by his peers and his generation, had fallen into an entirely undeserved obscurity in recent years, but the work here emphatically places him in the front ranks of his profession. Looking through these pages, it's hard not to feel that the commercial artists of Cornwell's time easily surpassed the fine artists. Certainly, it's hard to imagine how someone who could draw and paint this way would be received today.
This attractive book is a thorough and comprehensive collection of color work, studies, and sketches, all with commentary and excellent reproduction.

Dean Cornwell was the instructor and an icon for a generation of American illustrators and muralists. Capturing and expresses the evolving aesthetic and social values of American culture from 1914 until his death in 1960, his work was exceptionally popular with both the general public and the art critics of his time. With both black-and-white as well as color examples of his work, Dean Cornwell: Dean Of Illustrators has long been out of print and unavailable to American art history studies. This superbly reproduced and presented Collectors Press edition is a very welcome contribution to personal and academic artbook collections and will well serve to introduce a major American talent to a whole new generation of students and aspiring artists and illustrators.

There were theological and spiritual giants in the earth in the days of the English Puritans, and Stephen Charnock (1628-80) was prominent among them. His Works present a feast of rich teaching and exposition, characterized throughout by sound theology, profound thought, and an imaginative style. The five volumes now reprinted from the classic nineteenth-century Nichol edition contain a total of more than 2,800 pages and 64 distinct discourses or sermons. Of these, only one was published during the author's lifetime, all the rest being edited from his manuscripts and published by his friends, Richard Adams and Edward Veal, after Charnock's death in 1680.
While expounding timeless truth, Charnock's discourses are strikingly relevant to contemporary discussions. Then, as now, there were many willing to declare their atheism publicly, who would not only say it in their hearts, but publish it with their lips, and boast that they have shaken off those shackles which bind other men's consciences. However, every atheist is a grand fool. If he were not a fool he would not imagine a thing so contrary to...the rational dictates of his own soul, and contrary to the testimony of every creature and link in the chain of creation.

About the Author
STEPHEN CHARNOCK was born in London in 1628, studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was converted, and preached for a time in Southwark. He undertook further study at Oxford, becoming a Fellow of New College, and later Senior Proctor. He served in Ireland as chaplain to the Governor, Henry Cromwell, and became a popular preacher. On the Restoration of the monarchy (1660) he returned to London, studying and ministering privately till 1675, when he began a shared Presbyterian pastorate with Thomas Watson at Crosby Hall, Bishopsgate. He died aged 52 in July 1680.

Since the author never published his works, save one sermon entitled "On the Sinfulness and the Cure of Evil Thoughts," it is impossible to detail the purpose of Charnock for the writing or publishing of this monumental work. However, we can glean form the comments to the reader by the editors Adams and Veal, we can deduce that they believed the material of these some sixty-four (64) sermons or discourses are of such great spiritual weight that the church would only immensely benefit by their publication.

"So that thou hast here, reader, a specimen of the strain and spirit of this holy man, this being his familiar and ordinary way of preaching, and the sermons coming out first...that a blessing from heaven may be upon this work, and upon thee in reading and studying the nature, and beauty..."

In the words of J.I. Packer, "Charnock has no desire to speculate, but only to declare the works and ways, the nature and character, of the God of the Bible."

Charnock developed these messages or discourses from intense study, prayer, and meditation. He then would preach these discourses from memory or with very little notes. Charnock's design was to inform, inspire, and integrate his flock's heart and soul with the divinely inspired word of God. His intended audience was his flock and any all believers who bend their heart and soul to the Spirit of God.

The style of Charnock was very didactic. He seems to put as much weight and meaning into each and every word as He could. His style is formal and of the time and period of the early to mid-17th century.

In evaluating Charnock's style it is easy to see how clear, concise, and very forceful. When I say forceful however, I mean backed by the power of the Holy Spirit and by their belonging to God. The table of contents gives almost know clues as to how the volumes are organized other than the tiles of the sermons. This is not a regular book where main ideas and sub-points are developed. There is no determining or detecting topical or chronological points.

These volumes affected me very deeply. I used Mortimer J. Adler's second level of reading, called Inspectional Reading, from his book How to Read a Book. I used his format of systematic skimming or pre-reading to familiarize myself with these five (5) volumes. These sermons are very deep and need read many times to get the full benefit. They certainly improved my spiritual life by reading them. This collection of Charnock's volumes enhanced my own personal spiritual understanding and course. I would recommend this set without a single reservation to any Christian of any level who will honestly take the time to prayerfully and meditatively read this discourses.

It is impossible to discover a theme and thesis for this collection. Again, it is unlike other books written with specific themes or thesis, it is a collection of sermons or discourses on varying topics and scriptures. The reader must discover the theme and thesis of each sermon or discourse as one reads them.

This collection is of utmost interest. Charnock accurate exegetes the Scriptures for the benefit of his readers. The importance of this work cannot be overstated in this lifetime. The spiritual value contained in this collection is second only to the Bible itself.

Very little is known about Stephen Charnock, much to his own design and desire. A smidgen of information about Charnock was gleaned from the sermon preached at his death and from a brief pre-fix entitled "To the Reader" by the publishers Adam and Veal. He even disappeared from the grid for about fifteen (15) years. As a godly man and theologically educated he is immensely qualified to preach as he did.

Charnock was born in London in 1628 and studied for the ministry at Emmanuel College in Cambridge. He preached in Southwark, England. Charnock then took more education at Oxford. There is a subject and scripture index at the end of volume five (5). There are a few notes at the bottom of the pages of each sermon for explanation or definition. There is no foot-note or end-note page as these are sermons. There is no bibliography.

In summary, I am still being blessed by the depth of study and information contained in these five (5) volumes. The content is essential to the spiritual well development of God's people.

Volume One - contains an introduction to Charnock's life, the first eight (8) sermons on The Existence and Attributes of God.

Volume Two - contains the conclusion to the sermons on The Existence and Attributes of God.

Volume Three - contains his sermons on regeneration. This is a must read! This tells how spiritually dead sinners are made alive with new life in Christ.

Volume Four - contains fifteen (15) more sermons pertinent to the Christian life. The first six (6) sermons are from the Gospel of John and relate to enjoying happiness in the saving knowledge of God through Jesus Christ.

Volume Five - contains nineteen (19) sermons from the New Testament and five (5) sermons from the Old Testament on various topics pertinent to believers.

I am reviewing only the quality of the books themselves, because when I was looking for this set (electronic or hard copy), I discovered that it is not easy to get a set that was free of errors.
I spoke with someone at Banner of Truth Publishing to inquire about their edition and I was told that it was free of the errors that other sets have. That person explained the process used to obtain these books from the 19th century copy; and how Banner of Truth produced the error free version.
I purchased my set from them directly and am pleased to say that it is a quality set of books.

I have listened to several discourses from vol. 5 at sermonaudio.com and have been anticipating reading them. Stephen Charnock's writing about the mortification of sin is very insightful. In an effort to understand my own sin more thoroughly, I have read John Owen's work on mortification also. Charnock's work,however, has given me a fuller understanding and I'm just beginning to digest it. I praise God for both of these servants of His.
