Worthy of re-discovery!

Americans generally know little of the federal government's first experiment with inflationary monetary policy: The Greenbacks. Wesley Clair Mitchell's book is a detailed and at times gripping account of the outbreak of the Civil War and the immediate, enormous funding needs this placed on the Union. President Lincoln pressured the Congress to authorise the printing of unbacked, fiat dollars, known as 'Greenbacks'. Notwithstanding generally strong support for the war effort, many in Congress felt that undermining the previously sound monetary policy of the United States was a huge mistake with potentially damaging consequences. Mitchell presents both sides of the debate in detail and then goes on to demonstrate how the opponents of the Greenbacks were proven right in their dire predictions. Today, some 150 years later, deep into a financial crisis and with confidence in the unbacked, fiat dollar eroding with each new round of inflationary measures by the Federal Reserve, it is instructive to revisit the Greenback episode. A History of the Greenbacks may be a long lost classic but it is highly deserving of re-discovery.

This book is, so-to-speak, an absolute must for the Transmission Planner.
The planner's successful implimentation of any point-to-point PDH or SDH radio network depends on his ability to select fit-for-purpose equipment, to understand the important issues regarding careful antenna selection, to understand the quality objectives he is designing for, to understand the mechanics of link design at the hand of ITU standards, to understand some of the most significant propagation effects, to understand the issues w.r.t. site selection and to be able to do proper frequency planning when needed - This book covers it all and more.
Trevor is a true expert in his field. The insights shared in his book and his practical advice throughout is backed up with his enormous experience and well researched knowledge.

Trevor Manning's Microwave Radio Transmission Design Guide is a comprehensive guide to the practical design and deployment of digital microwave links of small to medium capacity, of the kind now used so widely in mobile telephone and wireless systems.
The author, in clear and economical English, begins with an overview of modern microwave equipment and typical applications and moves on to discuss every aspect of microwave link planning including scoping, path planning and surveying, site selection and testing, selection of equipment and antennas, including passive reflectors. For those with mostly analogue experience, Chapter 9 gives an overview of the PDH and SDH payloads carried by most present-day systems.
There are detailed chapters on microwave link design, propagation, fading, frequency planning and a discussion of ITU reliability standards as applied to microwave links, including practical advice on when to employ hot-standby or ring-main protection.
This book will be valuable to both engineers and technicians involved in almost any aspect of microwave link design and construction. Highly recommended.

Invisible Planets: fortunately these gems have not been invisble for some time now. All of the collected stories have been published (in translation) before in well known periodicals. Now they are one piece. Don’t know, what is to be expected? That’s because this is Sense of Wonder!
For a long time undisclosed to the english speaking readership, there has been a whole world of SF in China, which Ken Liu (The Grace of Kings), translator of all the stories in this book, finally reveals. Want to know what happened in the Year of the Rat, or how to fold a city like Beijing? Take this up and be astounded.
Yet what Liu claims in his foreword to the edition is, that this is not about what makes these SF stories chinese, but what about these chinese stories is worth to be known to non-chinese speaking SF-readers, and the answer is: all of it.
Stories by: Chen Qiufan, Xia Jia, Ma Boyong, Hao Jingfang, Tang Fei, Cheng Jingbo, and, last but not least, the much lauded Cixin Liu (The Three-Body-Problem).
What IS to be expected is the full range of fiction, from the social approach to science and future, up to Hard SF. Also additional nonfiction (namely three essays), which makes this all the more a milestone in global SF history.
And about the hard work, Ken Liu put into this? As they say: it takes a master to translate masters. Liu is a master, quod erat demonstrandum.

Fantastic anthology exposes readers to the greats of Chinese SF

Invisible Planets is an incredible collection of science fiction stories from mainland China. Each of the stories is a gem, multifaceted, beautiful and utterly unique. What you perceive depends on the angle from which you look at it. So many wondrous places and amazing characters. What all of the stories have in common is their ability to enthrall the reader and excite the imagination.

If you enjoy short science fiction, this is an anthology that you must add to your collection. You won't be disappointed by the quality and the variety of the pieces included. The opportunity to explore the perceptions of writers long unavailable to the English speaking public is an added bonus.
