About the Author
Byung Hong Kim is a graduate from Kungpook National University, Korea and a Ph.D graduate from Cardiff University. He has been a researcher at universities across the world and has been honoured for his achievements by the Korean government and the Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology, of which he is now a member. He is also a member of the Korean Microbiological Society and the American Society for Microbiology.

Professor Gadd holds a personal chair in microbiology at the University of Dundee and is head of the Division of Environmental and Applied Biology in the School of Life Sciences. He is a highly respected researcher and author worldwide. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Biology, the American Academy of Microbiology and the Linnean Society. He received the Charles Thom award in 2004 from the Society for Industrial Microbiology for his outstanding research contribution to the applied microbiologyical sciences.

Although this account traces the subject's entire life, it is particularly strong in its depiction of Stowe's battle to juggle her writing career with the demands of six children, the drudgery of 19th-century housework, and the burden of a hypochondriac husband. While the tremendous impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin is cogently stated, Coil does not make this her focus as do many Stowe biographers. The author's lesser-known works, as well as her shifting literary reputation, are also noted. Sixteen pages of clearly reproduced period photographs and illustrations complement the text. This is more personal and insightful than Robert Jakoubek's Harriet Beecher Stowe (Chelsea, 1989).

Coil's admiring biography of Harriet Beecher Stowe creates a portrait of the celebrated author as a dutiful daughter; a committed abolitionist; a loving wife devoted to an often brilliant but ineffectual husband; and a compulsive, prolific writer who wrote everything from gothic romances to articles on the evils of alcohol in order to support her family. Adding a personal touch to the book are excerpts from Stowe's letters and works, many of which focus on the small hassles of daily life and the frustrations of trying to write. Readers will be most interested in how Stowe came to pen Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Coil does not disappoint them. She thoroughly documents the writing of the novel, its reception in the South (which prompted Stowe to write A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin to verify what she'd written in the novel), and the worldwide response to the book. The biography will be a useful addition to any collection, but it will be particularly helpful to students needing information about the years leading up to the Civil War, the work of the abolitionists, and the novel that "moved the world." A solid, well-detailed Impact Biography of the doughty New Englander to whom Lincoln remarked, when she traveled to the White House to tax him with his tardiness in proclaiming emancipation, ``So this is the little lady who made this big war.'' Indeed, Uncle Tom's Cabin's 1851 publication had energized the country by bringing to life truths about slavery that Stowe had observed on a visit to the South and also researched--facts she later presented, in defense of her novel in A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin (1853). Coil's chronological narrative is straightforward and lively; she's forthright about such topics as Harriet and her eminent brothers' philosophical differences with their equally eminent father's Calvinism and her impecunious husband Calvin Stowe's hypochondria, but readers are left to read between the lines for the deeper meaning of relationships (though ``happily married,'' Harriet was typically in better health and more productive during Calvin's absences). Still, a thorough and readable portrait of a fascinating figure, competently set in her historical context. Great ideas

I teach 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade science. I had the opportunity to see Rick Smith at a workshop, and I was aboslutely blown away by the amount of ready-to-use ideas he provided. Although the workshop was mainly focused on his material in Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching (also an awesome book), Smith brought up ideas from Picture This!.

Picture This! provides ideas for implementing the use of "visual rubrics" in your class. Examples of ideas I borrowed- I let kids keep their textbooks in my classroom, and I was irritated that I had to fix the piles at least once a week. So, I followed Rick's advice and took a picture of books in messy piles; I photoshopeed the word "NO!" on it. I also took a picture of the textbooks stacked the way I wanted and photoshopped "YES!" on the photo. I hung the two pictures up side-by-side near the textbooks; within a day, all the books were stacked in neat piles because the kids easily understood what I wanted.

I also used a "Readiness to Learn" rubric. My 7th graders are loud and obnoxious- more so than any class of 7th grade I had before- and it was pointless to try and yell over them to be quiet. I had kids volunteer for pictures; the first picture was of chaos in the room, which I labeled as "5." I worked down the scale to "1," where everyone in the picture was ready to learn. This system was SO SLICK. If it got too loud in my room, I'd simply hold up the number on my figers that the kids were at. Once I was able to get down to a 1, I was able to continue.

There are SO many rubrics in this book that can be used. I think it would be the most useful to elementary teachers, but I found many uses (beyond those two things listd above) for my middle and high school kids.

There are many great examples of rubrics throughout the book, including a password to an online collection of rubrics & videos that you can use as desired. This is an amazing book that is incredibly useful- a picture is definitely worth a thousand words!!!

Very nice!

I started out my year with my Learning Strategies class with these pictures and something to discuss every day about them for the first week or two. They then added these pics to their folders after writing a description of each. I found this book very helpful with my ESE students and I can see where most teachers, esp. in ESE classes and the lower or middle grades, would find this book invaluable as well.

GARRETT is Professor of International Policy Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies./e He has previously taught at the University of Virginia, the American University of Beirut, and the Naval Postgraduate School.
