JAMES M. CONRAD, PhD, is currently a professor for the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Jim has worked with IBM, Ericsson/Sony Ericsson, and BPM Technologies. He is a senior member of the IEEE, member of the Project Management Institute and IEEE Computer Society, and board member of the IEEE Computer Society Press operating committee. He is the author of three books on autonomous robotics and has written numerous journal articles, conference papers, and technical papers.

Great Idea, Great Project

What a great idea! Here is a full fledged micro-computer controlled robot device. No, it's hardly a robot so sophisticated that it will take over the world, but it is enough to make an interesting project for a science fair, or a Daddy-Son/Daddy-Daughter project.

The book and kit to build the robot come together. Everything you need (except a few simple tools and batteries) is included. The assembly is quite easy, again, good for a Daddy/Kid project. The basic design is about a dozen years old, and about 30,000 assembly kits have been distributed. Some of these are being used for some fairly serious research at several universities.

Stiquito is by no means low tech. The legs move using Nitinol, an alloy actuator wire that expands and contracts, roughly emulating the operation of a muscle. The application of a controlled pulse of electricity along the wire causes heat which causes a change in the crystalline structure of the wire.

The essential guide to eXist

Retter and Siegel’s eXist is a well-conceived and executed on-ramp for new users and a comprehensive guide for practitioners at all levels. A practical companion to Priscilla Walmsley’s XQuery (O'Reilly 2007) for users of the popular, open source eXist platform, the book guides readers in applying XQuery and XML to develop real-world desktop or web applications, soup-to-nuts. Far from just a beginners guide, its ambitious, comprehensive, even encyclopedic coverage of core through advanced aspects of eXist will earn a lasting space on your bookshelf.

The first chapters walk you through download and installation of the software, offering tips for every major platform eXist supports—Mac, PC, and Linux. It explains how to navigate the built-in documentation and resources, how to get data into and out from eXist, and how to connect eXist to popular tools for XML and XQuery work, such as oXygen. By the end of Chapter 3 (“eXist 101”), you’ll have built a searchable, browse-able website around a collection of Shakespeare plays encoded as XML. These lessons and apply it to their own project as a simple proof of concept. A perfect on-ramp to the software.

Throughout, the book provides better diagrams and more comprehensive descriptions of eXist’s internals than eXist’s own documentation, often filling in the gaps where no documentation existed in the first place. If some of these examples sound esoteric, rest assured that at some point when you are using eXist, you will need to use this information yourself or provide it to someone (e.g., a system administrator) who will. It’s all there, along with pointers to additional resources.

eXist is a pleasure to read. The authors write in clear, plain English and employ humor judiciously. The book offers insights into how eXist works and how to get things done in eXist available nowhere else. Complete versions of the code introduced in the book are available for free download on GitHub. The code samples are compelling, not perfunctory, and worth downloading and exploring. The index is comprehensive.

About the Author
Byung Hong Kim is a graduate from Kungpook National University, Korea and a Ph.D graduate from Cardiff University. He has been a researcher at universities across the world and has been honoured for his achievements by the Korean government and the Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology, of which he is now a member. He is also a member of the Korean Microbiological Society and the American Society for Microbiology.

Professor Gadd holds a personal chair in microbiology at the University of Dundee and is head of the Division of Environmental and Applied Biology in the School of Life Sciences. He is a highly respected researcher and author worldwide. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Biology, the American Academy of Microbiology and the Linnean Society. He received the Charles Thom award in 2004 from the Society for Industrial Microbiology for his outstanding research contribution to the applied microbiologyical sciences.

Grade 7 Up-A richly detailed biography that presents a very human portrait of a woman who was devoted to her family and was instilled with a sense of social responsibility. Although this account traces the subject's entire life, it is particularly strong in its depiction of Stowe's battle to juggle her writing career with the demands of six children, the drudgery of 19th-century housework, and the burden of a hypochondriac husband. While the tremendous impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin is cogently stated, Coil does not make this her focus as do many Stowe biographers. The author's lesser-known works, as well as her shifting literary reputation, are also noted. Sixteen pages of clearly reproduced period photographs and illustrations complement the text. This is more personal and insightful than Robert Jakoubek's Harriet Beecher Stowe (Chelsea, 1989).

Coil's admiring biography of Harriet Beecher Stowe creates a portrait of the celebrated author as a dutiful daughter; a committed abolitionist; a loving wife devoted to an often brilliant but ineffectual husband; and a compulsive, prolific writer who wrote everything from gothic romances to articles on the evils of alcohol in order to support her family. Adding a personal touch to the book are excerpts from Stowe's letters and works, many of which focus on the small hassles of daily life and the frustrations of trying to write. Readers will be most interested in how Stowe came to pen Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Coil does not disappoint them. She thoroughly documents the writing of the novel, its reception in the South (which prompted Stowe to write A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin to verify what she'd written in the novel), and the worldwide response to the book. The biography will be a useful addition to any collection, but it will be particularly helpful to students needing information about the years leading up to the Civil War, the work of the abolitionists, and the novel that "moved the world." A solid, well-detailed Impact Biography of the doughty New Englander to whom Lincoln remarked, when she traveled to the White House to tax him with his tardiness in proclaiming emancipation, ``So this is the little lady who made this big war.'' Indeed, Uncle Tom's Cabin's 1851 publication had energized the country by bringing to life truths about slavery that Stowe had observed on a visit to the South and also researched--facts she later presented, in defense of her novel in A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin (1853). Coil's chronological narrative is straightforward and lively; she's forthright about such topics as Harriet and her eminent brothers' philosophical differences with their equally eminent father's Calvinism and her impecunious husband Calvin Stowe's hypochondria, but readers are left to read between the lines for the deeper meaning of relationships (though ``happily married,'' Harriet was typically in better health and more productive during Calvin's absences). Still, a thorough and readable portrait of a fascinating figure, competently set in her historical context.
