There's quite a bit of activity in Buddha of Suburbia. A bureaucrat becomes a suburban guru who marries a follower with a son who's a punk rocker named Charlie Hero. Consequently, the guru's son is propelled from his bland life into a series of erotic experiences in London. All the while, Hanif Kureishi keeps the tone lively with wry wit. On the description of suburban life: "We were proud of never learning anything except the names of footballers, the personnel of rock groups and the lyrics to 'I Am the Walrus.'" He also bends cultures, classes and genders while blasting the racism of British life in this 1990 Whitbread Prize winner.

Kureishi is the author of two controversial screenplays, My Beautiful Launderette (1985) and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987). This novel, written in a similar vein, deals with many of the same themes: father-son relations, punk rock, bisexuality, and class and racial prejudices in England. The story is told through the eyes of Karim Amir, "an Englishman born and bred, almost." Karim is a Holden Caulfield-like character who observes and analyzes the shortcomings of his society as he moves out of London's suburbs into the larger world. The book provides a witty, satiric view of English popular culture in the 1960s and 1970s, but it is fairly thin on plot and character development. This may be one instance where the movie version will actually be better than the book.

A novel of laughs and heartbreak

One of my favourite books of all time. Read it when it was first published and just reread it to see if it held up. It was Kureishi's first book and he has proven he was not a one book wonder. I think it may have been one of the earliest books about the South Asian experience in the UK. I would put this up there with Brick Lane and White Teeth as interesting reads on contemporary life in the multicultural UK.

Too slow

I am sorry to say that it is annoying... I left it in the middle of the story. However, I can say that it gives a good idea of how Indians live and are integrated in England..besides this I am a little bit disappointed by Kurieschi...

An Englishman born and bread, almost

I first read this book as a teenager, and then again about ten years later. There was a lot to recommend this book at bother periods in my life, although I saw different things in it. As a teenager, I was mostly focused on the Bildungsroman aspects of the novel. The anxious, self-conscious, wants-so-bad-to-be-cool protagonist who is embarrassed by his father and just wants to get high and have sex, and maybe figure out what adulthood even is sometime. It was good enough to warrant me reading it again, and this time I was blown away by the social commentary that I missed the first time around. Karim is an Englishman, almost, as he declares in the opening line, but it would be just as useful to say he is nothing at all, or everything. He is bi-racial and bi-sexual, two things more shocking in the 1970s than they are today, a fact that places him at the fringe of society, allowing him to look in both directions and critique the entire social order.

Karim's father has led a fairly boring life and is now enjoying a moment of fame as a sort of guru for over-privelged white people, even though he doesn't actually believe the "Eastern wisdom" he's espousing at their house parties. What his pretensions allow him is a key into the kind of world he cannot, as an immigrant, go, but he must degrade himself in order to do so, become a caricature. Karim's lover, Eleanor, is practically slumming it with Karim, by wanting to be anything other than the upper class girl she is, and his first real crush, his father's mistress's famous son, might be a bit more pathetic than he initially appears, not to mention his best friend, a radical feminist forced to choose between her ideals and her father's love. It's a novel about race and how things don't have to be violent to be not-right, about growing up and the growing specter of Thatcherism, but it's also a novel about identity, and the lengths we go through to achieve the one we want.

This book isn't perfect. It can be a bit uneven and may have more going side concerns than it can handle, but it is a solid, interesting read that will make you laugh even as it makes you think, and if that doesn't make it worth the buy, I don't know what will.

Clarifying the Mishnaic status of women

Wegner tries to understand the status of woman as given in the Mishnah. Her major point is that it is by and large determined by her sexual status. A minor girl is under the authority of her father, a married woman under that of her husband. The father can sell the daughter to her prospective husband. The wife must undergo the trial of 'Sotah' at suspicion of infidelity, whereas there is no such demand of the husband.

Wenger claims that women , such as the girl who attains adult status, the divorcee, who are not under the sexual jurisdiction of a man have prerogatives and freedom.

Wenger too points out however the privileges and respect the system gives to women, the way the Torah protects the woman by such means as Ketubbah, and by the Halachic demands made upon the husband to provide for his wife's sexual needs, her food and clothing, her standard of living at least as high as it was previously.

Wegner says that women in the Mishnah have mixed status often, combining elements of being chattel and of being independent respected persons.

Knowing the complexities associated with studying Jewish Law, especially those laws based on gender, this book is an asset to you library.
Wegner explains these laws, offers a variety of Rabbinic commentaries throughout the centuries as well as modern day feminist interpretations and arguments. Her easy to follow commentary makes understanding the history of the Mishnah and purpose of these laws a comprehendable process for the professor as well as the students of the Mishnah. I would highly recommend adding this book to your library, preferably in hardback, seeing how you will refer to it time and time again.

Interesting and Useful

A better title might be, "A Feminist Look at the Treatment of Women in the Mishnah".

The author makes no attempt to hide the fact that she is a feminist and some of her conclusions reflect her feminist philosophy rather than the facts presented. The author also gives clear indication that she does not consider Scripture as devine revelation but apparently the work of men. If the reader keeps these things in mind he should find that the book IS very interesting and may be helpful in seeing how the rules of the Mishnah relate to women.

The author provides many of her own interpretations of Scripture and the Mishnah, some of which I find in no other place and stand in sharp contrast to other commentaries I've read. One significant passage where the author appears to add her own twist is Numbers 30:2-17. She regularly adds conditions associated with sexual relations that are not found in the text and must be presumed, at best. The JPS Torah Commentary: Numbers (English and Hebrew Edition)

The book appears to be well researched and well organized. The author presents the rulings regarding women in a very systematic and logical organization. She covers many combinations, special conditions and circumstances of women and how the sages addressed them. It can get a bit confusing when she presents the contradictory rulings of different rabbinical schools but that is the nature of the issue.

I do recommend the book for some good insight into how Jewish society see and deal with women.

As a matter of full disclosure: I am a conservative Christian. I research Jewish thought because of our common heritage, but I must admit that I know too little of Hebrew and Jewish thought - thus this reading. I have some serious disagreement with many of the author's conclusions.

Should the author ever revise the book, and I hope she does, I would like to suggest a couple things:
- The end notes are excellent and I believe should be read. I would, however, have preferred them to be footnotes rather than endnotes. The constant flipping to the back is a bit of a distraction. The notes would fit well in the text as footnotes.
- I would like a chapter or appendix that looks at the examples in the historical narrative of Scripture and compares the historical event with the rules in the Mishnah.
- Although this book was written to specifically addresses the Mishnah, there are Scriptural passages that apply to women that are never referenced. I'd like to see better coverage of the Scriptural passages since it is clear the Mishnah is based upon Scripture.
- I'd like to see a Scriptural index.
- The author does an excellent job of defining terms in the text as she introduces and uses them, however, a glossary would be a welcome addition.

Vasily Nekrasov studied Economics at the St. Petersburg State University and Quantitative Finance at the Ulm University. He worked as a software developer for banks and insurance companies and as a risk manager for the German Finance Agency (central service provider for the Federal Republic of Germany’s borrowing and debt management). Currently he works as a risk analyst and model developer in energy branch.

I am writing this on my father's account and can attest to the quality of information in this book. For the mathematical finance student, like me, it summarizes core concepts in an efficient manner. No room was wasted on unnecessary information and the math was very quick and systematic.

For the lay investor (or more specifically trader), the book skips unecessary details and gets straight to the application. I think of the material as similar to the pythagorean theorem: you do not need to know how to derive it, simply how to use it. Derivations of the material are openly available online and the author sources at least one derivation. This book will teach you the basics of portfolio optimization used by professionals and the Kelly Criterion -- the ideal amount to "bet" per transaction.

One striking difference between this book and others is that it provides workable code in R that does exactly what it talks about in the book. Many other books merely talk about running MC but this one shows you how to do it and apply it.

Great and practical book on quantitative money management.

Found this book to be an extremely practical and illustrative guide to concepts that are usually only covered in very dense academic literature. For example, I found it far more insightful than The Kelly Capital Growth Investment Criterion, which was interesting but fell short of being useful (in a first order sense) in investing.

Would highly recommend to anyone with an interest in money management or who is looking to practice the financial applications of R.

Radio talk-show host and bestselling author Ramsey (Financial Peace) is less a financial analyst and more of a preacher, which explains both his popularity and the appeal of this book, which just might gain a wide audience. He first exhorts the reader to take "baby steps," which are designed to build on each other: first, save $1,000 as an emergency fund; then, pay off all debts from smallest to largest; save a larger three-to-six-month emergency fund; finally, start to save for college and pay off your home mortgage. Ramsey understands the difficulty in putting these steps into action, and therefore packs his book with personal testimonials from everyday people who have used his system and have become debt free, with obvious struggles. The key is what Ramsey calls "Gazelle intensity," which is to live a financial life the way a gazelle saves itself from an attacking cheetah-"outmaneuver the enemy and run for your life." While Ramsey provides some helpful charts and graphs so readers can keep track of their efforts to follow his steps, the strength of this book is that it is a straightforward motivational tool. He provides the brutally direct truth about the hard work it takes to become free of debt, and his directness is a great part of the book's charm.

One of My Favorites

I have read dozens of finance books and this is one of the best. I would put it up there with Automatic Millionaire, Rich Dad Poor Dad, and Pirates of Financial Freedom. It isn't perfect though which I will talk about later.

Who is this book for? Everyone can benefit from it, but it is great for married couples and those in their late 20s, 30s, and early 40s. Young adults could benefit tremendously from it, but I'm worried it might not be exciting or fun enough to hold their attention. It's not really meant for retirees.

--- The Good ---

* He says financial freedom is 80% behavior and 20% knowledge which is so important, and he emphasizes this by pointing out there are a lot of broke finance professors.

* There are many real-life success stories of real people which shows his method works, and they also provide inspiration.

* He lays out his seven Baby Steps and makes them simple to understand. He points out that living right financially is not complicated. It may be difficult, but it's not complicated.

* I really liked the quote, "If you worked for a company called YOU Inc. and you managed money at YOU Inc. the way you manage your own money now, would you fire you?"

* The book includes helpful budget forms and worksheet in the back of the book.

* He isn't all gloom and doom. He wants you to have fun and even approves of buying a $30,000 watch, but only after you reach step seven and can afford it.

--- The Not-So-Good ---

* He doesn't go into a lot of detail on how to increase your income. Dave Ramsey is rich because he is a business owner who can make money from his radio show, books, seminars, programs, etc. It would have been great to get his advice on that, but he probably didn't want to overwhelm the reader with too many topics.

* I feel his previous bad experience with debt (he was over-leveraged with his real estate investments) has made him overly zealous on not having any debt. College loans can be very appropriate for some people, business loans can be great in the right situation, and his statement that you should put money toward paying down debt rather than getting the company 401(k) match seemed too extreme to me.

* The book wasn't super entertaining. I found a few parts to be a little dry and repetitive. While it certainly wasn't boring, I wish more money management books would be like the new personal finance adventure novel, but I guess that isn't this book's purpose. Still, there were a couple parts that made me chuckle and he did have some interesting stories.

* He stressed putting 100% of your investments in stock-related mutual funds. First, I feel ETFs are probably better than mutual funds because they are cheaper and won't underperform the market. Second, recommending a 100% stock portfolio to everyone regardless of age, financial goals, or risk tolerance seems risky to me. Plus you wouldn't experience the diversification benefit of owning non-correlated asset classes.

* He doesn't talk about the benefits of setting S.M.A.R.T. goals or having an accountability partner, which have been shown to greatly help people achieve all kinds of dreams.

Overall it is a very good book with a lot of good advice and inspirational case studies. You certainly won't regret reading it.

About the Author
Jo Hockley is currently research fellow/clinical nurse specialist at St Columba's Hospice, Edinburgh. She has worked within the hospice movement since 1979 but has spent most of her energies disseminating palliative care into the acute hospital sector. She has set up two hospital-based palliative care teams in the UK and has published widely on this subject and other practice issues in palliative care. She is currently working on a collaborative action research project with independent nursing homes in Edinburgh developing palliative care at the end of life. David Clark is Professor of Medical Sociology within the Academic Palliative Medicine Unit of the University of Sheffield. He has written widely on the sociology of religion, family life and end-of-life care and he has been involved in research and teaching in palliative care since 1989. His current interests include the history of hospice, palliative care and related fields; policy development and international issues in the growth of palliative care; and palliative care ethics.
