Hegel's Aesthetics: Lectures on Fine Art, Vol. I, by G. W. F. Hegel

This is the first of two volumes of the only English edition of Hegel's Aesthetics, the work in which he gives full expression to his seminal theory of art. The substantial Introduction is his best exposition of his general philosophy of art. In Part I he considers the general nature of art as a spiritual experience, distinguishes the beauty of art and the beauty of nature, and examines artistic genius and originality. Part II surveys the history of art from the ancient world through to the end of the eighteenth century, probing the meaning and significance of major works. Part III (in the second volume) deals individually with architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and literature; a rich array of examples makes vivid his exposition of his theory.

He spent his life in his native Germany, elaborating an enormously ambitious and broad-ranging philosophical system which has exerted a continuing influence on European and Anglo-American philosophy. Sir Malcolm Knox was Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of St Andrews from 1936 to 1953, and then Principal of that university until 1966. He published translations of many of Hegel's philosophical, theological, and political writings. He died in 1980.

Not since Aristotle has Philosophy so Illuminated Fine Art
By Paul Trejo
It is not every century that is so fortunate to receive a vision of Fine Art that illuminates the foundations of Art and what Art means for the human species. Hegel first distinguishes between ordinary Aesthetics and his notion of Fine Art, that is, Human Creativity. Nature can be Aesthetic, but only Humans create Fine Art, and it is Fine Art that Hegel wishes to explore in this masterpiece.
In great detail, Hegel explains why his concept of Spiritual Freedom is central to Art, just as it is central to Politics, to Religion, to Free Thinking and to Science. Fine Art is distinguished by its direct and personal appeal. A human hand fashions a single object with such care, devotion, skill and imagination that it may be treasured by millions for centuries. This is no act of conditioned reflexes, but an act of profound Freedom and awareness of Spiritual reality.
The key to Art, for Hegel, is always the Spirit. If the Spirit can shine through, then a work of Fine Art can be a great work. The more the Universal Spirit of humanity shows forth, the more attractive that work is to the millions. For that reason, Hegel suggested, the greatest Art is religious Art or any Art that rises to the level of the spiritually sublime, as in Tragedy.
Hegel considered that there is a hierarchy among the Arts. The Arts with the most matter are always a little bit lower than the Arts with less matter. For example, for Hegel, Architecture is the lowest form of Art, because the Original Idea can rarely be perfectly executed through coordinating and budgeting the large crowd of workers needed to complete it.
Sculpture is higher than Architecture, but the limitations of the large marble mass were considerable when compared with the relative Freedom offered by oil on a canvas exhibiting colors, shapes and light, said Hegel.
Higher than Painting are Dance and Music, Art forms that again require many people. However, the substance of these Art forms is not found simply as the human body or the musical instrument, rather, it is found within fleeting motions of the body, or the fleeting vibrations of the instrument. Music is ethereal, and when a musician stops playing, all Music itself stops. Further, Music is invisible to the eye, audible to the ear but also to the heart, and has the capability of manipulating human emotions in the most unique manner.
But the highest form of Art, said Hegel, is Poetry, and the highest form of Poetry is Tragic Drama. Drama is an imitation of Life - not just as in Comedy, the external vagaries of Life, but the inner Life of the human being who suffers and who dies.
Hegel remained a Christian all his life, although he was, as Cyril O'Regan aptly demonstrated, a Heterodox Christian. So we should not be surprised when we read that the Tragic Drama of Christ was, for Hegel, the highest expression of Fine Art, and a narrative that could not be repeated enough times by the Artists of each century.

Escalando Sonhos (7CUMES) (Portuguese Edition), by Gustavo Ziller

Move on.

From Tokyo to New York, a cocktail renaissance is happening as "bar chefs" create delicious elixirs worthy of their kitchen counterparts. An epicenter of this barroom artistry can be found at the Absinthe Brasserie & Bar in San Francisco (a city that spends more money per capita on alcohol than any other in the country). Bartenders Jeff Hollinger and Bob Schwartz share their artisan approach for stunning creations that unveil a new spectrum of flavors. Fresh herbs and even aromatic lavender are deftly used to augment classic and new cocktail recipes. Syrups and mixes are carefully crafted from scratch, ensuring small-batch perfection and a harmony of flavors. Acclaimed photographer Frankie Frankeny captures their virtuoso mixing performances with a refreshing take on the cocktail, creating a showpiece for any living room.

BARTENDER LOVES THIS BOOK

Actually this was a gift to my nephew (age 26) who is a bartender and he LOVED it,
said the drinks were mixed "correctly" with the right liquor, etc. Very classy book.
He will actually use it!

Cute book
By M1tche11
I love the book, nice pictures. I've been to that bar in SF and it's great. The only drawback is you can't really make any of the cocktails yourself because most of the ingredients are pretty obscure/rare alcohols.

interesting when you don't want an intellectual read
By Kathleen
this is just fun
it's like your talking with your favorite bartender and learning about different/hard-to-find liquors and different cocktails

no, it's not an intellectual book by any means, which is why i got it
it's one of those things you pick up every once and a while and think, 'oh, interesting' after reading a short passage about an obscure liquor

The good news is that this is an extended version of what I found on line; the bad news is he has not yet released the second book and I certainly hope there is a third and fourth book. There is sex in the story, some of it really interesting; if that offends you, then read something else. There are a minimal number of stock characters: a few obnoxious coaches, a few super coaches. A few mindless boys and girls (lots of characters in high school and college), they are less stock characters than realistic portrayals of type. There is a lot of warmth, loyalty, family, friendship, and of course, betrayal...or is it? So far I have read this twice, which considering my reading load from grad school is an accomplishment, I just don't know if I should be proud of that or not. One of my profs said to read anything but schoolwork before I went to bed for the night; so I started reading this, bad idea, overslept. Late to work. Loved this book as a change of pace from 16th century Iran and 8th century China; academic historians are not prone to putting interesting sex scenes in their books...shame on them..

Great story
By Amazon Customer
This is a series. This story is a first person account told by a teen that had been a small kid that was picked on by the bullies at his school. The neighbor girl he grew up with helped him overcome his problems. As he grew older, the tables were turned. I enjoyed the story. I will continue to read the series as it becomes available.

Color is addressed to artists and art students in all media, in both fine and applied arts. It provides an informative but non-dogmatic introduction to the many different approaches to understanding color, including aesthetics, science, psychology, and history. Illustrations for the chapters on color concepts are taken from all media. Special aesthetic and practical considerations for color usage in each medium—such as ways that graphic designers use and specify printers' inks—are also explored. The realities of color use are accentuated by direct quotes from working artists. Technical terms are carefully defined in the text and also in a glossary. Those appearing in the glossary are printed in boldface when first introduced in the text. Special Features of the Fourth Edition

This fourth edition of Color reflects the tremendous range of color choices in the studio and the marketplace. There are now millions of colors available through computer graphics, more than the human eye can even distinguish. The section on computer-generated colors includes the complications of color matching when designers are working with both computer and printing technologies. Color choices in such crafts fields as ceramics, glass, and fibers are also mushrooming as they cross the soft boundary between fine and applied arts. Optical color effects continue to be an area of artistic experimentation, and these are illustrated and discussed in detail.

In the midst of these burgeoning choices, students are given a clear and solid foundation for understanding uses of color. Some 35 lively new images have been added to this edition, from cave paintings to twenty-first century virtual reality installations. Illustrations of points under discussion reflect the great variety in color applications, including historic and contemporary paintings, sculpture, installation pieces, crafts, photographs, advertisements, cartoons, commercial design, computer art, video, architecture, landscape design, interior design, and clothing. The work of women and multicultural art are naturally interwoven throughout the text.

For this edition, new visual demonstrations have been added, such as the effects of different lighting sources, reflective qualities of different surfaces, the Bezold Effect, and the phenomenon of color constancy. There is new material on the emotional and physiological effects of different hues, and on the spatial effects of colors. Cutting-edge virtual reality and video installations are illustrated and discussed. Website design and current printing technologies are included in updated discussions of computer-based art. Technical sections have been modified for greater clarity and ease of understanding. Technical material is provided in ways that can form take-off points for artists' own explorations of the intriguing world of color.

A special characteristic of this book is its extensive use of artists' own words about their use of color. More such quotations have been incorporated into this edition, and a new feature has been added: artists' quotations introducing each chapter.

Another special new feature of this edition is an appendix of Studio Color Problems. These comprise a great treasury of practical experiments with color based on the experiential teaching methods of the great colorist Josef Albers. Those using his experiential method might like to assign the first two chapters of the text to develop a general orientation and a basic vocabulary before launching into studio work, and then continue with the more theoretical and practical material introduced later in the book once students have made some discoveries on their own. Professor Zelanski is a former student of Albers and has found this method highly successful in four decades of teaching. Acknowledgements

Among the many artists in various media with whom we have worked in preparation of this book, we would like to pay a special tribute to the late Arthur Homer. His pioneering work in optical color mixtures is still ahead of its time. We are also grateful to Frank Noelker, the late John Roy, and Janet Cummings Good for their help in cutting-edge color technologies and for supplying outstanding illustrative material.

We are grateful to those professors who reviewed the earlier editions of this book; their suggestions have benefited all editions. Ruth Zelanski and Ron Lambert have helped in locating and providing images.

At Laurence King Publishing, Elisabeth Ingles has served as the enthusiastic and intelligent editor for this edition, and photo researcher Maureen Cowdroy has worked hard to track down new images. Our dear friend Lawrence King has been steadfastly supportive. Norwell F. Therien, our American editor at Prentice Hall, has firm conviction of the value of this book in helping students understand and make full use of the complexities of color.

Annette Zelanski has been of great help, as ever, and we want to express to her our love and appreciation. We owe her a very special debt of gratitude.

Mystery of Color Solved For Me!
By C. Roy
This book was required text for a color theory class I took recently. For years I've been looking for information on color but could not find anything beyond the basics, usually associated with painting/art books. This book is all- encompassing: information about various color theories, perceptions of color, color and light, color in printing and more. It is full of examples, pictures, graphs, charts. I came away with the information that I knew must be out there! I would recommend this book to any color student. Mine is dog-eared!

Brilliant book on Color Theory!
By Jim
This book is a must read for anyone studying the visual arts.

This is a brilliant book. He is a brilliant artist. I studied under Paul Zelanski at the University of Connecticut, School of Fine Art. He used to have a lot of fun with us during class critiques. A favorite saying of his was "You know, there is no such thing as an ugly color. But THIS... THIS comes pretty close (pointing to something hanging on the studio wall)!" Then he'd launch into a wondeful dissertation on the theory and practice of color. I learned a great deal from him. You will too from his book.

too useful to sell
By Abbey Moore
I always re-sell all my textbooks on amazon. This was my most expensive textbook and I was really looking forward to getting some of my money back at the end of the semester. Surprisingly though, I've decided to hold on to it throughout my time at art school. It's usefulness is worth far more than $60.

Radiomen, by Eleanor Lerman

There are two themes to Radiomen. First, if there are aliens interacting with our world, they are likely just as confused about who or what God is as human beings are; and second, whoever they are, they're probably just as fond of dogs as we are.

Laurie, a woman who works at a bar at Kennedy airport, doesn't remember that when she was a child, she met an alien on the fire escape of a building where her uncle kept a shortwave radio. The radio is part of a universal network of repeaters maintained by an unknown alien race; they use the network to broadcast prayers into the universe. She meets a psychic who is actually part of a Scientology-like cult called the Blue Awareness, as well as a late-night radio host. All have their own reasons for unraveling the mystery of the lost radio network. Laurie is given a strange dog by her neighbor, an immigrant and a member of the Dogon tribe - people who believe they were visited by aliens long ago and repeat a myth about how the aliens brought doglike animals with them. All Dogon dogs are supposedly descended from that animal.

As conflict develops between the Blue Awareness leader and the other characters, the Dogon act as an intermediary between the humans, who want to understand why the aliens need the radio network, and the aliens who need the humans to help them find a lost element of the universal network.

Poetic sci-fi, oh my
By M. Bohn
This is a wonderful story that is beautifully written. Even if you are not a sci-fi fan you will still appreciate the literary writing and the great character development. It is a quick read and makes you think about a lot of things afterwards like religion, cults and personal beliefs.

Convincing, casual, amusing and cool
By Sheila Deeth
Radiomen might be the builders of crystal sets, listening for radio echoes from foreign lands. Perhaps they’re engineers, running wires above the waves. Or maybe they’ve captured the sounds of alien transmissions. In Eleanor Lerman’s Radiomen they could be all of these. But forty-year-old Laurie just finds comfort in the sounds of her uncle’s radio after working the night shift mixing drinks. Then, one night, Laurie calls into a late-night talk-show and everything changes.

Author Eleanor Lerman tells this story in the totally convincing, casual, and mildly confused and amusing voice of her protagonist, giving the story an immediacy that soon has readers believing there’s a Blue Awareness cult out to get her. If they can’t get her, they might be after her uncle’s memory, her new dog, or even the guy who runs the radio show. From the far side of Queens to the pride of the rich and famous, from the wrong side of Rockaway to hints of African legends and the Dogon tribe, from now back into a history of uncles and fathers sailing the wild blue yonder with shortwave radios at their side, Radiomen captivates with casually evocative descriptions, cool commentary, wonderful dogs, and a cast of convincingly three (or more, or less) dimensional characters.

Do engrams hiss? Do memories hide? Do dogs believe in people, and do aliens pray? By the end of this wonderfully enticing tale, the biggest question is how on earth will it ever come to a close. But the author brings it to a captivating conclusion, with great good humor, passionate determination, and even a touch of curious reverence. Because, in the end, the real question is something entirely different. And without our questions, we’re adrift on a sea of radio waves.

Disclosure: I was given a free preview edition by the publisher and I offer my honest review

Compelling quality
By Toby Johnson
I really liked this book. And thoroughly enjoyed the compelling quality of the read.

With Radiomen, poet and novelist Eleanor Lerman has written another roman-a-clef-style novel that swiftly pulls the reader into its quasi-historical, magical, surrealist world. Lerman is author of Janet Planet which I previously reviewed quite favorably. I liked that book too. It was also about the mysterious side of reality. Janet Planet was an imaginary history of what might have happened in the life of the real world writer Carlos Castenada, the Hispanic ethnologist who supposedly met and studied with a Yaqui Indian shaman and psychedelic guide named Don Juan. Don Juan and Castenada became major characters in the psychedelic cult of the 1970s. It was never clear what was real and what was fictional in Castenada’s series of books or what really happened to him and his three wives who disappeared without a trace following his death in 1998.

Radiomen, set a few months after the 9/11 collapse of the World Trade Towers with flashbacks to the 1960s, similarly, imagines how and why a character, modeled on L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology, might have been inspired—and compelled—to create a modern, sci-fi like, religion, one with a cult-following, rumors of coersion, mistreatment and defrauding of believers, AND great popularity in Hollywood including even a certain easily recognized actor. But the story isn’t about the good or bad side/truth or falsity of “Blue Awareness,” as the religion is called in the novel, but about the quest for contact with alien visitors which might have driven Howard Gilmartin, founder of Blue Awareness, and his son Raymond, into the world-changing role as prophet, seeker of the secret history of the universe, and possible con-man and crook.

Radiomen is told in the first person of Laurie Perzin, a middle-aged woman working as a bartender at Kennedy Airport in Queens. A lot of the book—peculiarly perhaps or maybe very appropriately—involves accounts of Laurie’s travels around Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan, by train, by subway, by black-market unlicensed taxi, by car, by foot. She’s always on the move.

The narrative voice is a little bored and tired and a little desperate and insistent. From the very start I found myself pulled into the mystery behind the curious event which starts her hero-journey, wondering why she was so reluctant and blas about something that seemed so important and interesting. She calls in to the late night radio program of a new-age, fringe phenomena enthusiast, talk-show host modeled on the real life Art Bell, and out of the blue is told by his guest, a clairvoyant psychic (and, we’ll learn, a member of the Blue Awareness inner circle), about an event in her childhood she’s always remembered with a certain skepticism and a certain dread.

It turns out to be characteristic of the narrator that instead of engaging the psychic on the radio and finding out what this strange revelation is about, she shuts down and denies that she recognizes the memory. Why? What was that event?

Throughout the novel, Laurie seems to have to be pushed, practically kicking and screaming, into each next step in the unfolding discovery that her favorite uncle, Avi Perzin, who’d been an amateur ham radio operator in the mid-20th century, with his home-built radio had made some kind of contact with aliens. It turns out that the uncle had also been involved with Howard Gilmartin and the start of the Blue Awareness cult. And, now that they know she’s out there because she called the guest psychic, that Blue Awareness inner circle gets quite interested in what pieces of radio equipment Avi Perzin just might have left to his niece.

Laurie Perzin’s resistance to the hero journey suddenly splayed out before her just made me more curious and compelled to keep reading. I, the reader, too felt that sense of dread yet couldn’t put the book down because I had to know what this was about.

What it’s about is interstellar communication, late night radio, fringe phenomena, contact with extraterrestrials, their visit to the Dogon People of West Central Africa and a breed of dog they left behind, Blue Awareness/Scientology as a vehicle for wisdom and secret knowledge, a cosmic version of a world-wide-web transmitting messages out into the “Wild Blue Yonder,” and, very importantly, what the aliens’ think about God.

The main character’s journey then, in a way, is to find God, or at least to discover what’s behind the human—and alien—quest for connection to the mystery that’s mythologized as “God.” At the end, Laurie seems to have overcome her resistance and found a kind of meaning for her life.

That’s everybody’s goal, of course. Everybody’s life can be just a series of days and weeks and years to get through—trips across town. OR, if one wakens to the mystery and allure of a deeper and wider consciousness that transcends that quotidian existence, then you can get more…

That’s the punch line of the book: “What did I want? I wanted more.”

There actually is a “punch line” in the plot, a climactic moment when Laurie is actually graced with a vision of the alien “radioman” and the realization of what it is they’re broadcasting through this cosmos-wide-web. And though that punch line is actually given away in the descriptive blurb on the cover, it’s a thrill to get to it in the course of the reading.

“God,” space aliens, mystical knowledge, the secret of the universe, an alien breed of dogs, the true meaning of religion—what more could you ask for from a novel. It’s all very understated; the protagonist is always reluctant and always a little bored and distracted, but in the end she gets the vision, she gets mystery, she discovers her life in the greater, grander scheme of things. AND she gets to keep the dog.

UFOs and alien abduction certainly are a focal point for wonder these days, a kind of quasi-scientific mythology about the nature of the greater cosmos. This book is a contribution to that crucial discussion of our time.
