Practising what she preaches which makes every word in this book that much more valuable
By Andr-Pierre du Plessis
I am one of those people who returned to grad school mid-career in the hope to 'get ahead' by moving abroad and setting new challenged for myself. Although it worked out and I got an amazing job because of it, I feel like I need even more advice now than ever before. Betty's book isn't only useful for recent grads or working moms, but also for people like myself who think they finally got that job they dreamt about but have to realise that your job and your career are two separate things. Although your job is fulfilling, you still need career advice. 'Work Smarts' is an incredible booster for anyone who feel like they have to push themselves even more but don't exactly know how. The idea of a 'company of one' is a completely new idea for me and is something that I think everyone will identify with.

As for Betty's writing: it is very fluent, it reads easily and it is amazing to see how she managed to weave all the incredible interviews she has done into every lesson in this book.

One thing that stood out for me in particular is her chapter on 'the importance of being likeable': You'd think that in the hardcore world of Wall Street you'd have to be tough, walk over everyone and never look back. As a foreigner who really only have 6 months worth of experience in corporate America, I have to say that being likeable IS incredibly important and can get you ahead. Movies and popular culture about wolfs and sharks are only half-truths. Just look at Betty's own career: she got where she is today because she is incredibly likeable and an absolute joy to work with. So yes, full disclosure, I do work with her and can vouch for her likeability, but I bought this book and wrote this review without her knowledge / incentive / approval.

An excellent read!

I really enjoyed Work Smarts. It was funny, real, practical and not what I expected from a business book. It is informative and inspirational for anyone not just someone trying to climb the corporate ladder. I think everyone can take away a few life lessons from Betty and reading this book.

This book has gotten a lot out of me!
By Beckham Low
Betty Liu, a Bloomberg news reports and anchor. i’ve get to know her when she interviewed Elon Musk. I saw something in her, she has the ability to really question others while at the same time not offending anyone and getting things done her way. She stand out from all other interviewer and i think she’s really likable, she question but doesn’t judge. After all,i went to amazon and look up if she’s done any interview or are there any resources regarding her, i then came across this book and read the description and she’s in my to buy books list straight away and ordered the book not long after. Her book is very original in terms of content, what she talks about is really new and all from her perspective, nothing that i have read before. She starts with how she’s gotten into the business and start off with the topic The company of one, how CEO made the shift to create company of their own. She will discuss different topics like fear, flow, networking and she tells her story and opinion followed by illustrating different point of view from the CEOs then bring it all together. Her advice the end was interesting especially about making decision. This book has gotten a lot out of me, i love the content and i love the book.
