A story that captivates the reader until the very end
By martsima
Lord Hurlingthon is two hundred and thirteen years old. He cannot die, even if he wants to, and has tried many ways to end his life, to no avail. He does not know why he cannot die, either, and he has hired doctors and several detectives to help him. Not one has been able to.
Enter Detective Richard Saussure - our deus ex machina. He does not want to take the case, but after talking to some people, he agrees to do it, even if the formidable Marlon, Lord Hurlingthon's butler, tries to intimidate him. He is supposed to be mourning Kara, but we get a brief glimpse into this. Nothing will take our attention - or his - away from the bizarre case. What draws Saussure's attention from the beginning, and ours too, is that the land where the house in which Lord Hurlingthon lives is dead - literally.
In his pursuit of the mystery, he recruits Annette Kensington, a coroner, to help him. She is an exceptional character. Saussure often takes refuge in Grumpy Al's muddy looking bar, where he can eat but also get tips. And even more important, help from Al, another outstanding character.
After a mystical and extraordinary night in the woods, Saussure learns some facts from a druid, Irup, who tells him "There is no way out of the forest in the night for foreigners" Then, the forest turned off the glow when it got dark. "No more fluorescent green to light up their night."
Finally, in Sacred Heart cemetery, where Lord Hurlingthon's family is buried, Saussure finds the answers to his quest - an so does the reader, in this excellent first novel. We are captivated by the story, and also by the way it is told - a style that creates a "dream like" atmosphere in which we are caught until the very end.

A good story

Richard Saussure has a reputation for getting to the truth of things. But this case is leading him down paths he's not sure he wants to follow. How can he figure out if this old man who looks like he's two hundred and thirteen years old really is that old? Relying on help from people who don't necessarily work on the right side of the law, Saussure painstakingly puts the pieces in place until he is sure he has found the answer.
(un) Dead by Trinidad Giachino is a well thought out, intense mystery with twists and turns that makes guessing the outcome difficult. The story itself is smooth and the detail is intricate. A good deal of work obviously went into making this book the suspenseful read it is.
I will admit I had trouble liking the main character. A lot of this is because I didn't really have enough backstory for him. What, exactly, turned him into a guy who hardly anybody likes and left him basically a shell of a man? It is alluded to and I'm pretty sure I pieced it together correctly, but coming into his life at this juncture did not make me feel compassion for him. He may be a good detective but his people skills when dealing with those willing to help him, granted some of them at a cost, left him wanting in my mind. I thank the author for a review copy and I give the book four stars.

UFR Reviews (un)DEAD
By Home. Love. Books.
I'm a really big fan of mysteries and detective type novels, in fact I used to read them a lot before I discovered fantasy books. So when a book comes my way that is a combination of the two I always get excited. I love trying to figure out the mystery before the novel is over, and love when a book makes me think, and makes me want to know what is going to happen next. Part of the reason why I enjoyed reading un(DEAD) is because I really didn't know what was going to happen next within the plot and it made me want to read more so I could find out.
One of the most important things in mystery type books is pacing (not that pacing isn't important in all books), you need the pacing to reflect the sense of suspense that mystery books need to have. I think that this book did a really good job with pacing, and keeping me interested. I didn't feel like there were any points within the book that were laggy or made me get bored.
I really like the secondary characters in the book as well, they all had a part to play, and I think they all played their parts really well. Personally I think it's easy to make a main character more likable than the secondary characters, but in this book I actually found it a little bit opposite. I thought the Detective as a main character was not as fully thought out as I would have liked, and I did have a harder time connecting to him on a character level. I felt like I didn't know him that well, and I didn't necessarily understand his motivations and who he was as a person, which for me is a really important thing for me when it comes to liking characters. Thankfully the plot was strong enough to make me over look this issue within the book.
Overall, I did enjoy the book and I think most people will enjoy it as well, especially if you like mysteries. I think if you are looking for a paranormal book that is full of a world of paranormal peoples, then this might not be the book for you. But if suspense is your think then you should give this book a try.
