Excellent Collection from a Master Short Story Writer and Fine Novelist
By Kevin M. Derby
John Cheever ranks as one of masterful short story writers of the twentieth century--as this collection clearly shows. The Library of America has published two volumes of Cheever--one with his stories and the other with his novels. While not a great novelist, Cheever is a solid one and always a masterful writer and sparkling craftsman of sentences and creator of characters.

In his short stories, Cheever offers wonderful glances at people from the 30s-70s learning to adjust to life in America during that time--the rise of the suburbs, the perils of prosperity, the conflicts between romantic ideals and normal life.

While Cheever went out of his way to ignore his earlier stories--those found in "The Way Some People Live"--most of his major stories are included here including "Goodbye, My Brother" and "The Swimmer" and some form his earlier works. The Library of America edition also has a number of essays. Most of these stories focus on Manhattan and its suburbs in Westchester County but there are occasionally looks at New England and, to a lesser extent, Italy.

This is an excellent collection of stories and readers will be enriched. Even the stories that do not measure up to the rest of the collection are still solid--Cheever is that skilled a writer. Highly recommended--with one group of readers as the exception. Anyone who has "The Stories of John Cheever" will not find much new here though some of the writer's essays--especially charming looks at Chekov and F. Scott Fitzgerald--are excellent.

The LOA edition of Cheever's novels contains five books of varying quality. "The Wapshot Chronicle" is a solid novel about a declining New England patrician family. While the general plot is not memorable, Cheever's wonderful craftsmanship shines and he includes some funny scenes and solid characters. The sequel--"The Wapshot Scandal"--is a bit darker and is a solid work but it's a weaker book.

While Cheever tackles the American suburbs in "Bullet Park," readers of his stories will find this novel much darker. Despite being trashed when it was first released, "Bullet Park" holds up well and serves as a turning point as Cheever's life and works went in different directions. This was followed by "Falconer" which is generally considered one of Cheever's finer works. This novel focuses on love and redemption through the story of a man imprisoned for murdering his brother. There are a number of themes that readers of Cheever will quickly recognize--homosexuality, love, siblings, married relationships.

"Oh What a Paradise It Seems" is not quite a short story or a novel--while it is less than 100 pages, it was published by itself. It's fair to call this work a novella.Originally published in 1982, weeks before Cheever's death, the author did not have a high opinion of "Oh What a Paradise It Seems" but it garnered good reviews from the critics who were aware of Cheever's final battle with cancer. Cheever offers is a lyrical look at ecological damage and public corruption thrown in with a romance between an older man and younger woman and a host of strange asides including an account of a Bulgarian psychic, a fishing trip of two men who just had a homosexual encounter and the narrator telling readers "this is a story to be read in bed in an old house on a rainy night" when the "dogs are asleep and the saddle horses--Dombey and Trey--can be heard in their stalls across the dirt road beyond the orchard." If that's not bizarre enough, the narrator informs the readers that, as he is telling the tale, he is "lying, concealed with my rifle, waiting to assassinate a pretender who is expected to come here, fishing for trout." In the hands of lesser writers, this would have been a disaster. It's a testament to Cheever's skill that he presents a solid and entertaining novella despite all the strange asides and vague plot.

The skill and craftsmanship that made Cheever one of the greatest writers of his era can clearly be seen in these books. But even the better of these novels--namely "Wapshot Chronicle" and "Falconer" are episodic and come off as a series of wonderful scenes linked by character while plot is downplayed. While a talented novelist, Cheever does not rank as a great one--but he is a great short story writer. Cheever is more than worthy of being included in the Library of America which increasingly is becoming our literary pantheon and readers will profit from reading these two volumes. Best of all, they will enjoy them. Highly recommended.
