Sense and Sensibility (Penguin Classics), by Jane Austen

Jane Austen's first published work, meticulously constructed and sparkling with her unique wit

Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love - and its threatened loss - the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love. This edition also includes explanatory notes and textual variants between first and second edition.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Amazon.com Review
Though not the first novel she wrote, Sense and Sensibility was the first Jane Austen published. Though she initially called it Elinor and Marianne, Austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason. The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion. Commenting on Edward Ferrars, a potential suitor for Elinor's hand, Marianne admits that while she "loves him tenderly," she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for her sister: Oh! Mama, how spiritless, how tame was Edward's manner in reading to us last night! I felt for my sister most severely. Yet she bore it with so much composure, she seemed scarcely to notice it. I could hardly keep my seat. To hear those beautiful lines which have frequently almost driven me wild, pronounced with such impenetrable calmness, such dreadful indifference! Soon however, Marianne meets a man who measures up to her ideal: Mr. Willoughby, a new neighbor. So swept away by passion is Marianne that her behavior begins to border on the scandalous. Then Willoughby abandons her; meanwhile, Elinor's growing affection for Edward suffers a check when he admits he is secretly engaged to a childhood sweetheart. How each of the sisters reacts to their romantic misfortunes, and the lessons they draw before coming finally to the requisite happy ending forms the heart of the novel. Though Marianne's disregard for social conventions and willingness to consider the world well-lost for love may appeal to modern readers, it is Elinor whom Austen herself most evidently admired; a truly happy marriage, she shows us, exists only where sense and sensibility meet and mix in proper measure. --Alix Wilber

I loved it to bits!
By Felicia J
"She was stronger alone, and her own good sense so well supported her, that her firmness was as unshaken, her appearance of cheerfulness as invariable, as with regrets so poignant and so fresh, it was possible to be."

I have SUCH a girl crush on Elinor Dashwood. Good, kind, practical Elinor - empathetic, compassionate to a fault, and as capable of deep feeling as her demonstrative mother and sister Marianne. She was the ideal prism through which to experience this story of the love and devotion between sisters, through romantic trials and disappointments. I loved this book to pieces.

I never thought a novel by Jane Austen could leave me in so much suspense, put me through so much agony for the fate of its characters, and make me laugh out loud so often. I didn't know Austen could be so sharp, witty and sarcastic.

Her novel contains very little of what we would think of as action. Plot details are revealed through conversations between different characters. Oh, those conversations! Austen's insight into human nature and foibles was absolutely first rate. Her novel left me wondering what effusive Mrs. Jenningses, selfish Mr. Willoughbys and sly Lucy Steeles she must have known in real life.

I never could get through an Austen novel before trying this audiobook. The formal language in which she wrote left me befuddled, sure I was missing the meanings beneath the surface of her words. Juliet Stevenson's incredible narration freed me from that difficulty. Her performance was fresh, nuanced and lively, teasing out all the irony, humor and pathos of the words.

I finished the book with a little sigh of happiness for Elinor and Marianne and regret to have to leave their world so soon. I cannot wait to listen to more Jane Austen.

** spoiler alert ** Pride & Prejudice is one of my favorite books of all time. Before Sense & Sensibility it was the only Austen book I have ever read. Needless to say, my hopes for this one were high.

Though it wasn't bad by any means, it just didn't live up to the standard set by Pride & Prejudice. Elinor is not nearly so enjoyable a character to follow as Elizabeth Bennett. She just didn't feel as lively and fleshed out. Perhaps she had too much sense where Miss Bennett is less inclined to please people for the sake of their pride (and thus more enjoyable to read). There were too many parts where I found myself wishing that Elinor and Marianne would do less crying and moaning and whining and more standing up for themselves. (Thinking about it now though, there are a few parts where Marianne tells people exactly what she thinks, much to their dismay, and much to my enjoyment.)

The characters in this book just seem so much flatter and duller than in Pride & Prejudice. The liveliest one was perhaps Mrs. Jennings, and it wasn't until the end of the novel that she redeemed herself as a likeable character. The plot is incredibly slow and we spend much time listening to the girls be teased about who they may have set their marriage prospects on. Or we spend time listening to them cry. Or consoling each other. I don't know. It just wasn't my idea of a good time.

Spoilers ahead: Additionally, Im not clear on if Lucy is supposed to be a stupid simpleton with a fickle heart or if she is supposed to be an evil conniving harlot, but regardless I hate the way her story ended. I know we are supposed to be happy for Elinor that she got Edward in the end, but that Elinor should suffer the dislike of Mrs. Ferrars and Mrs. Dashwood while Lucy receives praise and is adored by them is so annoying to me. On top of that, that she came away wealthy to boot and that Edward is not reinstated to rank of eldest brother I find maddeningly infuriating. Mrs. Ferrars and Mrs. Dashwood (Elinor's sister in law) and by way of stupidity at being convinced of his wife's ridiculous reasoning, Mr. Dashwood, are all so awful and unlikeable I couldn't stand reading about them. I suppose that's the point but I'm a fan of books where the evil characters receive their just deserts. (Unless of course, Austen's idea of just deserts is that they all the bad people must go on sharing each other's company forever, happy though they may be.)

All in all, worth a read as a classic or an Austen fan, but definitely not my favorite.

He Hits Another Out of the Park!
By Goybabe
To tell the truth, David Shapard's Pride and Prejudice was so incredible, I worried about ordering another. I just didn't see how he could keep it up, especially considering how many of these books came out in an astonishing eight-year period. I should have had some faith. A great historian won't let you down. If the format gets annoying, order another paperback copy for a straight read. I own whole bookcases of Regency research, and rate these among a handful of the finest. While enjoying the story, very often words and situations fraught with a deeper meaning pass you by, until you read this. From fascinating detail of life, clothes and entertainments to psychology of the period subtly reflected in scenes, he's fantastic. I just ordered his newest one, Mansfield Park, and now have them all. I treasure them.

I might add that Belknap press has "annotated" versions they're peddling that are far pricier. Also lousy. The works are abridged, the print even on the Kindle is miserably tiny, and on several Look Inside they don't let you actually see a page of annotation. Stick with the master, who offers his at an astonishing price, less than I pay for SourceBooks reprints of Georgette Heyer.
